Year 2 Curriculum Overview

Our Year 2 class thrives on structure and routine, helping children feel confident and secure throughout the school day. A clear visual timetable is displayed at the front of the classroom so that pupils always know what they are learning and when.

At the beginning of the year, children take part in daily phonics lessons. Once secure in these skills, they transition to daily spelling lessons. Morning sessions are dedicated to English and maths, alongside Mastering Number, which supports children in developing fluency and confidence with key number facts.

Afternoons are filled with a rich and varied curriculum. Children take part in Little Wandle reading groups, handwriting sessions, and a range of foundation subjects including science, PSHE, RE, music, computing, PE, history, geography, art and design technology. Lessons are designed to be interactive, with plenty of discussion and practical activities to keep children engaged and to make learning enjoyable.

In Year 2, there is a strong focus on developing fluency and comprehension in reading. Alongside Little Wandle reading sessions, children participate in whole‑class reading lessons, where key skills such as prediction, retrieval, vocabulary and inference are explored. We also enjoy daily story time and visit the school library each week. Our classroom features a welcoming reading corner, which can also be used as a calm space for any child who may need a short break.

Assessment is an important part of our learning journey. Each term, children complete maths and reading assessments, similar to those undertaken in Key Stage 2. In May, pupils take part in the voluntary KS1 SATs, which, alongside teacher assessment, help us track progress and identify next steps.

To end the week, our class enjoys ‘Koala Time’ for a short time on a Friday afternoon. This is a special opportunity for children to choose fun, practical activities linked to their current topics. Koala Time encourages learning through play while supporting independence, creativity and the development of positive friendships.
